ASC PLANETARIUM PROGRAM PLANNED

Dr. Randy Emmons of the Adams State College Science Department has kindly agreed to give us a special program in February, although the date is not yet set. Watch for further information in the public media. Virginia Simmons will be working with Dr. Emmons on details. To give a hint of what this program will be about, here is a copy of her request to him:
"Because we plan to schedule a guided tour at Chimney Rock in the late spring, some background in archaeoastronomy would be useful to our group. Also, here in the San Luis Valley there is speculation that certain archaeological structures we have visited may have been used for seasonal astronomical observations. In any case, information about regular motions of sun, moon, and stars as viewed in this region would give us a better understanding of how astronomy could have been used by early people to identify changes of seasons. I understand that you provided a program of this sort for a summer course offered by ASC in 1996."
"A program lasting up to about an hour at the planetarium would be of much interest to our membership and would be greatly appreciated. We are unable to offer an honorarium, so we would be very amenable to opening up the program to students or the public if you should desire."

SCIENCE FAIR PARTICIPATION

The Steering Committee, which met on November 2, decided to offer support and assistance for the SLV Regional Science Fair, to be held March 13-14, 1997. We hope to sponsor a special award for a project in archaeology, with the minimum amount required by the fair committee being $50 for awards. Because time is short for promoting such a project, we may or may not be able to fulfill this goal. If not, we at least will have a jump-start for the 1998 Science Fair.

Last year 520 students participated in the Science Fair, and 2000 people attended the awards ceremony. This is a great opportunity for reaching youth and the public with education about archaeology. In the past Vince Spero and Ken Frye have had a Rio Grande National Forest and BLM Archaeology exhibit at the fair. The Steering Committee decided that we should assist them with this year's exhibit.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL NETWORK LIBRARY NEWS

The beginnings of an Archaeological Network Library are beginning to take form with a gift of publications from Frank Adkins of the Denver CAS Chapter to the Archaeological Network. Don Tucker CAS Membership Chairperson and Archaeological Network member from Cortez arranged for the transfer of the material. In addition there was an existing library from the old SLV CAS Chapter, which we have inherited.

The publications will be brought to Monte Vista for the January 11th meeting. There will be a discussion at the meeting about the best way to make the publications available to members.
