SHAW SPRINGS RANCH FIELD TRIP REPORT

An Archaeological Network sponsored field trip to Shaw Springs Ranch on April 18 was attended by about 25 members and several guests. Viewed were historic structures, including the original warm springs pool from the 1880s, prehistoric and historic stone structures, and rock art site 5SH1492 which consists of six panels of red painted pictographs and solid pecked, stipple pecked, and scratched petroglyphs of horned animal figures, attached human-like figures, and four legged animal figures located in four small rock shelters. Prior to the trip Ken Frye discussed artifacts that came from the ranch and in the field Vince Spero reviewed the process of recording archaeologic sites on Colorado Cultural Resource Survey forms.
Special thanks Mike Wisdom, the owner of the Shaw Springs Ranch, for leading the trip and allowing us to explore this beautiful cultural landscape

ARCHAEOLOGICAL CONSERVANCY VISITS SLV

In early March, Ken Frye, Virginia Simmons, and Mike Spearman, manager of the L-Cross Ranch on Carnero Creek, visited rock art and stone structures with Jim Walker, Director of the SW Region of the Archaeological Conservancy. Walker traveled from Albuquerque to see the ranch's archaeological resources. Later the Archaeological Conservancy made an offer to purchase acreage around the rock art, but this cooperative effort appears to have been rejected by The Nature Conservancy, which has been negotiating to buy part of the ranch.
