The website, designed and maintained by Marvin Goad, is excellent and we encourage everyone to check it out. At the meeting options for field trips and archaeological investigations were discussed and an initial listing was decided upon. Please read the activity schedule below and be sure to consult the website for more information about the trips/activities that are listed or for trips that are not yet in the listed. A road trace, possibly attributed to the toll road/stage line, will be followed and documented. Any associated sites along its path will also be recorded. The trip will involve walking approximately 4 miles round-trip over generally gentle terrain. Each year the Office of the State Archaeologist of Colorado sponsors an archaeological inventory to provide field training in surveying techniques for Program for Avocational Archaeolical Ceritfication (PAAC) volunteers. When archaeological sites are discovered during the survey, volunteers are instructed in the production of sketch maps, filling out standard recording forms, plotting site locations on topographic maps, artifact illustration, photography, and other tasks. The location for the 2006 Summer Training Survey is in the Pike's Stockade area of the San Luis Valley, south of Alamosa in Conejos County. Because the training site is in a remote location lacking facilities of any sort, and involves hiking across somewhat rugged terrain, prospective participants must be in good physical condition. The ability to contend with hot summer days, bothersome insects, the occasional rattlesnake, and generally primitive working conditions is a necessity. Volunteers must supply their own transportation, room and board, daypack, and personal gear such as canteens, but there is no fee for participation. The Office of the State Archaeologist of Colorado supplies all surveying, recording and mapping equipment as well as the professional archaeologist(s) who supervises the volunteers. Prospective participants must submit a signed PAAC application form. Applicants must identify which specific dates they prefer to participate (two days minimum) and provide their mailing address, phone/fax, and e-mail address. Contact the Assistant State Archaeologist at the Colorado Historical Society before May 24, 2006 by mail (1300 Broadway, Denver, CO 80203), phone (303.866.4671), FAX (303.866.2711) or e-mail kevin.black@chs.state.co.us in order to apply or for more information.
A
visit to the Velarde, New Mexico area, guided by Dr. Lee Mann. One of
the sites that will be visited has over 6,000 documented rock images documented
from the Archaic, through Basketmaker, to the Pueblo periods. You will
be amazed at the variety of images. A Visit to Largo Canyon, guided by Dr. Lee Mann. Visit 17th and 18th century structures, called "pueblitos" (Spanish for "small villages") built by Navajo people who were then threatened by Spaniards, as well as by other Indian tribes. In response to the threats the Navajo built a network of pueblitos in highly defensible locations, most with fortified walls. Others were built on high-points to serve as warning outposts. The architecture reflects a blend of cultures: Spanish style room-corner fireplaces with hoods; Pueblo style walls of stone and mud mortar; and ancestral Pueblo style access shafts and towers. Navajo rock art sites are also found. You can learn more about Largo Canyon at the following website http://www.desertusa.com/search/search.html (*search for pueblitos). Participants will spend the night of August 18 in the Bloomfield, NM area. Requirements: 4WD vehicle; Museum membership, and signed liability release form. Reservations must be made by noon on August 12. The maximum number of participants is 15. Participants are requested to pool rides when possible. A $10 fee will be collected for Dr. Mann's travel expenses. Bring your own water, snacks, hat, sunscreen, jacket, and walking shoes for rough terrain. Moderate, extended hiking of at least one mile may be involved. For more information please contact A.J. Taylor at 719-657-2847 or by e-mail at ajtaylor@rgcm.org. PLEASE NOTE: Other trips and activities to be scheduled this summer and fall will appear in the next newsletter and on the website at http://www.slvarchnet.org. |
