SLV Archaeological Network 2004 Activity Planning Meeting & Potluck In Alamosa

Last year the SLV Archaeological Network had a busy and varied schedule of events and we hope that this year's endeavors will be as informative and enjoyable. Each year we have a get-together to plan the upcoming year's activities. This year's will include a potluck dinner and a power-point presentation or our 2003 activities. Marvin Goad will also show us what has been happening as far as the new website and other computer related projects he has been working on. The meeting will be on April 3, 2004 at the Alamosa County Courthouse Conference Room. The potluck and presentation of last year's activities will begin at 5:30 PM. We will later hear from Marvin and discuss ideas for 2004 activities. Please be thinking of places you would like to visit, either in or out of the valley. There will also be opportunities for fieldwork discussed. We will try to be done with the meeting by about 8:30 PM. The Alamosa County Courthouse Conference Room is located on the corner of 4th Street and San Juan Avenue in Alamosa. Program For Avocational Archaeological Certification (PAAC) Colorado Archaeology Class to be held on

May 7, 8, & 9, 2004

The Program for Avocational Archaeological Certification (PAAC) is designed to be a mutually beneficial educational program for avocational and professional archaeologists. It was established in 1978 by the Colorado Archaeological Society (CAS) and the Office of the State Archaeologist of Colorado (OSAC). It provides a means for CAS members and other citizens of Colorado to obtain formally recognized levels of archaeological expertise outside of an academic degree program. It also facilitates contributions by avocatioists to public service and assistance in education, governmental management of cultural resources, research, and the protection of archaeological resources in Colorado. The SLV Archaeological Network sponsors PAAC classes each spring and fall. Response to the twice-a-year classes has been very good.

The Colorado Archaeology covers the major periods and cultures of Colorado's prehistory, concluding with a brief summary of historic period American Indian groups in Colorado. Regional variations, dates of occupation, subsistence strategies, technology, and important sites will be discussed for all major time periods and cultures. The class will be held on Friday evening, May 7 and all day on Saturday and Sunday, May 8 and 9 at the Alamosa County Courthouse Conference Room. Cost is a mere $12. This class is the first in the PAAC series in the survey category. Other classes in this category include: Historic Archaeology, Prehistoric Lithic (stone tool) Description and Analysis, Prehistoric Ceramic Description and Analysis, Perishable Materials, Research Design and Report Writing, Archaeological Dating Methods, and Field and Laboratory Photography. Rock Art Studies is another class we may have in the future. Please contact Loretta Mitson at 719-843-5328 or by e-mail at lmmitson@bewellnet.com for further information.
