VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY HAS BEEN CANCELED
What: Archaeological
Assessment and Test Excavation of Site 5SH2373, Arroyo del Arenal.
Where: Great Sand Dunes National Park
When: September 8, 9, and 10, 2006
(CANCELED)
Project Description:
ERO Resources, RMC Consultants, and the National Park Service, in conjunction
with the Friends of the Dunes, are seeking experienced volunteers to assist
in the fieldwork portion of a Colorado Historical Society grant. Fieldwork
will consist of survey, instrument mapping, in situ artifact analysis,
and limited test excavations. Arroyo del Arenal is a very significant
site discovered in 2004 that produced Tewa and probably Apachean ceramic
sherds, along with a diverse artifact assemblage, and known subsurface
cultural deposits. Accommodations will be camping with limited vehicle
access. NPS per diem will be provided ($15/day). Volunteers must commit
to at least two of the days. Excavation experience is preferable and PAAC
certification in survey techniques mandatory.
CANCELLATION
INFORMATION
Hello
all,
We have had an unfortunate delay in the contracting from the State and
we
will not have the contract in place before our scheduled field dates -
we
are forced to cancel for the weekend 9/8-9/10. I am truly sorry for any
inconvenience that this causes for your own personal scheduling. We DO
have
the contract, but in order to get the required signatures in time would
be
impossible. There are several factors which caused the delay; there were
some fund-wide funding issues that had to be resolved and then there is
the
bureaucracy that an entity such as the SHF has to go through. That said,
we
are very disappointed. We will be rescheduling the fieldwork for Spring
'07. Stay tuned and again my apologies.
Best Regards,
Sean Larmore, RPA

Planned
Activities for 2006:
-
Saturday,
June 10, 2006: Inventory of the route of the
Del Norte and Antelope Park Toll Road
Saturday,
June 10: Inventory of the route of the Del Norte and Antelope Park
Toll Road (later to become the route of the Barlow & Sanderson
Stage Line) located in the Seepage Creek drainage about 8 miles
to the southwest of Creede. A road trace, possibly attributed to the
toll road/stage line, will be followed and documented. Any associated
sites along its path will also be recorded. The trip will involve
walking approximately 4 miles round-trip over generally gentle terrain.
Meet at the baseball field in Creede just before you make the turn
toward Lake City at 9:00 AM on June 10. For more information please
contact Vince Spero at vspero@peoplepc.com
or call him at 719-852-6242.

- June
14 to 21, 2006: PAAC Summer Training Survey
Each year
the Office of the State Archaeologist of Colorado sponsors an archaeological
inventory to provide field training in surveying techniques for Program
for Avocational Archaeolical Ceritfication (PAAC) volunteers. When archaeological
sites are discovered during the survey, volunteers are instructed in
the production of sketch maps, filling out standard recording forms,
plotting site locations on topographic maps, artifact illustration,
photography, and other tasks. The location for the 2006 Summer Training
Survey is in the Pike's Stockade area of the San Luis Valley, south
of Alamosa in Conejos County. Because the training site is in a remote
location lacking facilities of any sort, and involves hiking across
somewhat rugged terrain, prospective participants must be in good physical
condition. The ability to contend with hot summer days, bothersome insects,
the occasional rattlesnake, and generally primitive working conditions
is a necessity. Volunteers must supply their own transportation, room
and board, daypack, and personal gear such as canteens, but there is
no fee for participation. The Office of the State Archaeologist of Colorado
supplies all surveying, recording and mapping equipment as well as the
professional archaeologist(s) who supervises the volunteers. Prospective
participants must submit a signed PAAC application form. Applicants
must identify which specific dates they prefer to participate (two days
minimum) and provide their mailing address, phone/fax, and e-mail address.
Contact the Assistant State Archaeologist at the Colorado Historical
Society before May 24, 2006 by mail (1300 Broadway, Denver, CO 80203),
phone (303.866.4671), FAX (303.866.2711) or e-mail kevin.black@chs.state.co.us
in order to apply or for more information.

- August
18 & 19, 2006 (tentative date) Rio Grande County Museum Field Trip:
Early Navajo Rock Art
A Visit
to Largo Canyon, guided by Dr. Lee Mann. Visit 17th and 18th century
structures, called "pueblitos" (Spanish for "small villages")
built by Navajo people who were then threatened by Spaniards, as well
as by other Indian tribes. In response to the threats the Navajo built
a network of pueblitos in highly defensible locations, most with fortified
walls. Others were built on high-points to serve as warning outposts.
The architecture reflects a blend of cultures: Spanish style room-corner
fireplaces with hoods; Pueblo style walls of stone and mud mortar; and
ancestral Pueblo style access shafts and towers. Navajo rock art sites
are also found. You can learn more about Largo Canyon at the following
website http://www.desertusa.com/search/search.html
(*search for pueblitos). Participants will spend the night of August
18 in the Bloomfield, NM area. Requirements: 4WD vehicle; Museum membership,
and signed liability release form. Reservations must be made by noon
on August 12. The maximum number of participants is 15. Participants
are requested to pool rides when possible. A $10 fee will be collected
for Dr. Mann's travel expenses. Bring your own water, snacks, hat, sunscreen,
jacket, and walking shoes for rough terrain. Moderate, extended hiking
of at least one mile may be involved. For more information please
contact A.J. Taylor at 719-657-2847 or by e-mail at ajtaylor@rgcm.org.
